Route Map

Qinghai Lake sits at 3196m on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, making it the largest inland lake in China and one of the highest navigable bodies of water in the world. The circuit around it is 360km of mixed gravel and dirt road through grassland steppe, wetland bird reserves, and Tibetan pastoral landscape that has changed little in centuries.

The lake is enormous — 105km east-west and 65km north-south — and riding around it takes the better part of a week at a reasonable pace. The southern shore follows a designated cycling corridor with smooth gravel, designated campsites, and the annual Tour de Qinghai Lake race infrastructure (the professional road race is held here in July). The northern and western shores are less developed, with rougher surfaces, fewer services, and the grassland steppe pressing up to the lakeshore.

The altitude is the primary physiological challenge. At 3200m, the air contains roughly 30% less oxygen than at sea level. Riders acclimatizing from low altitude will notice reduced power output, elevated heart rate, and disrupted sleep for the first 2-3 days. Acclimatize in Xining (2275m) for at least 2 days before attempting the circuit.

The grassland steppe around the lake is the core of Tibetan yak and sheep herding culture. Black yak-hair tents appear on the hillsides in summer, herders move with their animals across the grassland, and the blue lake against the yellow grass and snow-capped peaks behind is the signature visual of the Tibetan Plateau at its most accessible.

Bird life in the wetland reserves at the western end of the lake is extraordinary: bar-headed geese (which migrate over Everest), black-necked cranes, and brown-headed gulls nest here in large numbers. May and June are the best months for birdlife; the lake is at its fullest in August after summer rain.

Most riders take 4-6 days. The circuit is accessible enough for relatively inexperienced riders but should not be underestimated at altitude. Xining is the start and end point, with full services.
