Route Map

The traverse links Indonesia's two most significant volcanic peaks in neighboring islands — Rinjani in Lombok and Agung in Bali. The sea crossing between them is by boat from Padangbai or the Lombok Strait ferries. What makes this a serious endeavor is not the distance but the volcanic terrain, the altitude gain concentrated into short vertical sections, and the requirement to navigate trail systems that are partially maintained and partially improvised.

Gunung Rinjani (3,726m) requires a permit and a licensed guide for the summit crater rim section. The trek to the crater and back to the western trails is 3-4 days on its own, through a caldera that contains an active lake and a secondary cone (Gunung Baru Jari) that erupted as recently as 2016. The trail condition changes after every eruption or significant rainfall.

The crossing to Bali by ferry or fast boat takes 4-6 hours. From the Bali coast, the route to Gunung Agung's base crosses through the regency of Karangasem, which is culturally sensitive Balinese Hindu territory. The summit of Agung is sacred — access requires appropriate behavior, modest clothing, and respect for any ceremonial closures.

The Indonesian dry season (April-October) provides the only viable window. Rinjani's summit trail becomes dangerous in the wet season; Agung is similarly exposed to rainfall that makes the volcanic scree on the upper slopes lethal. Check eruption status before any summit attempt on either mountain.
