Route Map

The Via Gottardo Trail crosses central Switzerland through historic mountain corridors once used for trade between northern and southern Europe. The route combines alpine singletrack, old stone roads, forest paths, and steep mountain traverses.

Compared to high technical alpine routes, the terrain is more consistent and accessible, though still physically demanding. Climbs are long rather than extreme and most trails remain runnable for experienced mountain athletes. Weather exposure remains significant on higher passes where wind and rain arrive quickly.

Water and village access are frequent in lower valleys but mountain sections still require food planning. Summer temperatures range from 10°C in the mornings to 28°C in exposed valleys.

Navigation is relatively straightforward thanks to Swiss trail marking systems. Strong hikers and fastpackers commonly complete the route in eight to twelve days.
