Route Map

The Walker’s Haute Route is one of the best-known alpine traverses in Europe. The route links Chamonix and Zermatt through a series of high mountain passes, glacial valleys, steep scree descents, and technical alpine trails.

Despite its relatively short distance, the route is physically severe due to elevation gain and terrain difficulty. Daily climbing frequently exceeds 1800 meters and many sections involve loose rock, narrow traverses, and sustained descents that punish tired legs. Snowfields often remain on higher passes well into summer.

Weather exposure is significant. Storm systems move quickly across the Alps and lightning becomes dangerous on exposed ridges. Temperatures range from warm valley conditions to near freezing above 2500 meters.

Resupply is possible through alpine huts and villages, though spacing between points still requires careful planning. Water access is generally reliable. Navigation is manageable in good conditions but fog and snow can obscure trail markings.

Fastpackers commonly complete the route in seven to ten days.
