Route Map

The Bernese Oberland Traverse links some of the steepest and most dramatic alpine terrain in Switzerland through a sequence of high mountain passes and deep glacial valleys. The route combines narrow singletrack, exposed traverses, rooted forest trails, and rocky alpine descents.

Climbing is sustained and physically demanding. Several days involve more than 2000 meters of ascent and descent. Technical footing becomes critical on wet rock and loose scree sections. Snowfields remain possible into midsummer on shaded passes.

Weather exposure is significant. Storm systems move rapidly across the region and fog frequently obscures trail visibility above 2500 meters. Temperatures vary sharply depending on altitude.

Mountain villages provide periodic resupply opportunities but spacing still requires careful planning. Water is generally abundant through alpine streams and fountains.

Navigation is manageable with GPX tracks though multiple intersecting alpine routes can create mistakes during bad weather. Completion typically requires eight to fourteen days.
