Route Map
The Swiss National Park Gravel Loop circles the Engadin region using high mountain roads and remote valleys close to the Italian border. Riders encounter steep alpine climbs, rocky doubletrack, and long exposed traverses above tree line.
Weather is the primary difficulty factor. Conditions shift quickly and temperatures can swing from 25°C in valley floors to near freezing on mountain passes within the same day. Thunderstorms frequently develop after midday during summer.
The route is physically demanding due to repeated high-elevation climbing and limited recovery terrain. Several passes exceed 2300 meters and require low gearing for loaded bikes. Surface quality ranges from compact gravel to loose rock and rough drainage channels.
Resupply opportunities are moderate but expensive. Mountain villages are small and many stores close early. Water is reliable in most valleys but some exposed ridges require carrying additional capacity. Riders commonly complete the loop in four to seven days.
