Route Map

The Engadin High Trail traverses eastern Switzerland through exposed alpine terrain, remote valleys, and technical ridgelines overlooking the upper Engadin basin. The route is shorter than major thru-hikes but significantly more technical.

Athletes encounter steep climbs, unstable scree, narrow traverses, and rocky descents requiring careful foot placement. Snow patches often remain on north-facing slopes into midsummer. Altitude remains a constant factor with long sections above 2200 meters.

Weather changes rapidly and afternoon storms create dangerous exposure on ridge sections. Temperatures can drop below freezing overnight. Water is usually available through alpine streams but some ridges remain dry for extended periods.

Navigation demands attention because trail markings become sparse in remote sections. Fog can reduce visibility dramatically. Strong fastpackers usually finish the route in six to nine days.
