Route Map
The Munda Biddi Trail is one of the longest purpose-built off-road cycling trails in the world, running 1000km from Mundaring on the outskirts of Perth south to Albany on the Southern Ocean. The name comes from the Noongar language and means "path through the forest" — and that description is accurate for large sections of the route, which threads through towering karri and marri forest in a way that no road in the region could.
The trail was built specifically for mountain bikes and is surfaced with compacted gravel, limestone, and natural track. Around 65-70% of it is off-road singletrack and doubletrack, with short road connectors through towns. The singletrack sections are genuinely engaging — winding, occasionally technical, and visually unlike anything on the Australian mainland. Expect rooted surfaces after rain, loose limestone on the descents, and sections of deep sand in the coastal heathland that will test your patience and your tubeless setup.
Hut camps are spaced every 25-50km along the route, which changes the logistics entirely compared to most bikepacking routes. The huts have shelter, tank water, and composting toilets but no supplies — you sleep for free, but you carry food between towns. Major resupply points include Dwellingup, Collie, Balingup, Pemberton, Northcliffe, and Denmark. The gaps between resupply in the southern sections are longer, and some small towns have very limited stock. Plan your food drops carefully.
The season window is strict. Western Australia's southwest is a Mediterranean climate: wet winters (June-August), dry summers (December-February). Riding in summer means daytime temperatures of 35-40°C with no shade in the heathland sections. Winter means flooded creek crossings, closed campsites, and churned-up singletrack. April-October is the sweet spot, with the best wildflower display in September-October making that the most scenic window.
Wildlife encounters are part of the experience. Tiger snakes are common in spring and summer on the track edges — treat every shaded log across the path as occupied until proven otherwise. Kangaroos, echidnas, and black cockatoos are daily sightings. The karri sections at night are extraordinary if you're doing big days into the dark.
Navigation is well-signed and supported by the official Munda Biddi app, which works offline and shows hut locations, water sources, and alternative routes. The route is not technically demanding in terms of navigation, but the remoteness of the southern sections means a mechanical failure far from town requires a self-rescue mindset.
Most riders complete the route in 14-18 days at a comfortable pace. The fastest known time is under 5 days. Budget 12 days if you're a strong rider doing 80-100km daily; 20 days if you want to ride at a sightseeing pace and explore the towns.
